The MLCB is affiliated with the Computer Science Department at ODU and enjoys strong collaborations with leading researchers both inside and outside ODU. The MLCB Laboratory conducts cutting-edge research in both machine learning and computational biology. In machine learning, the lab is interested in building deep models for multi-instance, multi-task, and transfer learning tasks. In computational biology, the lab is developing advanced image analysis tools to investigate the developmental transcriptional networks in fruit-fly Drosophila based on spatiotemporal gene expression patterns. The MLCB Laboratory is collaborating with researchers from the Center for Evolutionary Medicine and Informatics at Arizona State University on the FlyExpress project (http://www.flyexpress.net/). The lab has been publishing peer-reviewed articles in both top conferences (e.g., NIPS, ICML, SIGKDD, UAI, and IJCAI) and journals (e.g., Bioinformatics, BMC Bioinformatics, JMLR, TPAMI, TCBB, TKDE, TKDD, and TNN). The available positions will cover full tuition and offer competitive salary. The candidates are expected to work towards their PhD degrees in machine learning and/or computational biology starting immediately. The candidates should satisfy the following requirements, but exceptional candidates from diverse backgrounds will be considered. 1. Research experiences in at least one of the following areas: machine learning, computational biology, computer vision. 2. Strong mathematical backgrounds in numerical linear algebra, probability and statistics, convex and numerical optimization. 3. Strong programming skills (e.g., C/C++, MATLAB, R, LISP). 4. Knowledge and experiences in image processing and biology will be a plus. The interested candidates should apply for the Computer Science PhD program of ODU via regular application process and state clearly in their applications that they wish to work with Dr. Ji.
