This new degree provides breadth while preserving the depth and rigor of a PhD program. ESE & DGF applications due January 15, 2011. CIRE brings together extensive and complementary resources at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to increase science, technology, engineering, and mathematics academic and research activities of national significance focused on energy-related science and engineering. CIRE offers an Energy Science and Engineering (ESE) PhD, and a concentration in ESE for students who prefer pursuing doctoral studies through existing programs. Both the ESE degree and the concentration include an emphasis on entrepreneurship and innovation, including opportunities for interested students to develop and implement business plans at the UTK College of Business Administration. Graduate students will join interdisciplinary research teams at ORNL and UTK, which will expose them to problem-oriented research and development, and encourage them to approach research problems from new directions. The Distinguished Graduate Fellowship (DGF) program is also administered by CIRE. This is a highly competitive fellowship program to create future national leaders in science and engineering. The fellowship leads to a degree awarded by the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, strong involvement in research projects at ORNL, and access to seminars and specialty courses that draw on both UTK and ORNL personnel.
