Yes, professors will generally consider students who have had some research experience in the past and have a clear idea of what they want to do. Whether you gain the experience as an undergrad or master student does not matter. Since you are asking this question on bbs, I think it\'s reasonable to assume that you don\'t have much research experience in the past, and this will definitely be a disadvantage in your application. You have many different ways to earn this experience. For example, you can do an internship in some research institutions, or you can do a masters, or you can even get into a PhD program and try to transfer a few years later. To answer your question specifically: 1. No research experience is a big disadvantage of course, but without it you can still get into some schools. So don\'t worry too much about this, just do the best you can. 2. Yes. Graduating with a PhD in a > 100 school will probably not get you very far if you want to find a faculty job in a reasonable US school, unless your boss is particularly well-known. 3. If you decide that you want to do a masters first, I think you should vastly upgrade the level of schools you apply. It\'s WAY easier than PhD application. You can only apply to top 50 schools, and try a few top 20 or even top 10 schools.
