Our Department has been at the center of the revolution in un derstanding the nature of matter and energy and the dynamics of the cosmos. Ou r faculty - three of whom hold Nobel Prizes and 21 of whom are members of the National Academy of Sciences - include leaders in nearly every major area of p hysics. World leaders in science and engineering, including 10 Nobel Prize rec ipients, have been educated in the physics classrooms and laboratories at MIT. Alumni of the MIT Department of Physics are to be found on the faculties of t he world's major universities and colleges, as well as federal research labora tories and every variety of industrial laboratories -- Science offers the boldest metaphysics of the age. It is a thoroughly hunman construct, driven by the faith that if we dream ,press to discover,explain and dream again, thereby plunging repeatedly into new terrain,the world will somehow come clear and we will garsp the true strangness of the universe.
