No. 086101 MAR 4 2005 Document Type: Article Language: English Cited References: 27 Times Cited: 2 Abstract: Using first-principles total energy calculations within density func tional theory, we investigate the energetics, kinetics, and transport properti es of Ti on clean and hydrogen-terminated diamond (100)-2 x 1 surfaces at incr easing Ti coverages. On a clean surface, an isolated Ti adatom prefers to adso rb on top of a C-C dimer row, and also diffuses faster along the dimer row dir ection. As the Ti coverage increases, the preferred adsorption site converts f rom an atop site to a site located between the dimer rows. Passivation of the surface at the monohydride coverage not only greatly enhances the Ti mobility, but also weakens the diffusion isotropy. Based on these energetic and kinetic characteristics, we propose a viable approach to fabricate ideal Ti quantum w ires on hydrogen-terminated diamond substrates. By adding extra electrons via bismuth alloying, we showed that both th e structural stability and the superconducting properties of such films can be tuned. The phase boundary ( upper critical field) between the superconducting vortex state and the normal state indicates an anomalous suppression of super conducting order just below the critical temperature, T-c. This suppression va ries systematically with the film thickness and the bismuth content and can be parametrized in terms of a characteristic temperature, T-c* ( less than T-c), that is inversely proportional to the scattering mean free path. The results indicate that the isotropic nature of the superconductive pairing in bulk lead -bismuth alloys is altered in the quantum regime.
