In particular, the authors aim to separate the e lectron-hole exchange energy from the hole mixing energy. The idea of tuning t he AES and DOP by uniaxial strain is attractive. At this time, I have serious qualms about the theoretical-experimental comparison. Therefore, I invite the authors to provide quantitative estimates for the size of the effects they cla im would explain those discrepancies. I cannot accept the paper as is. In particular, the failure of the theory to predict the AES experimental resul ts in figure 4a seriously undermines the theory, the experiment, or both. The authors should use their explanations on pages 9 and 10 to try and estimate th e size of the coupling of the 1L1E exciton with the 2H subband and the electro n subband. The authors should also try to estimate the size of the expected Z parameter for comparison with the results of their data fitting. Clarity of the paper suffers from syntactical problems. In particular, tenses are mixed up. In the abstract, the authors use the word "respectively" but do not refer to two sources. Equation (1) should refer to the original work by Iv chenko and Kaminsky, not to their Ref. 19. The paper can use some light editing to improve the language.
